Dental implants are a long-lasting solution to many oral health problems, and they can do wonders for your confidence and quality of life. While traditional dentures are a lifesaver for many individuals, they also have their caveats: they are cumbersome to wear, limit your food choices, and cause jawbone loss. Our dental implants in Munster, IN are a significant improvement and come in a variety of forms to suit your unique needs.
Want to know more about dental implants and whether they’re the best option for you?
What is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a titanium fixture that mimics and replaces the root of your natural tooth. It is used to replace a broken or missing tooth by substituting the root structure which will restore your mouth to ideal function, stabilizing the surrounding bone, tissue, and teeth. This will help prevent complications that could arise if the missing or broken tooth goes untreated. Replacing your tooth with a dental implant takes multiple appointments to complete. Once completed, Dr. Miller places a dental abutment and crown over the dental implant to restore the area where the tooth was missing or broken. A dental abutment serves as the base to which the crown is either screwed or cemented (or both) into place. Now you will have the look, feel, and function of your natural tooth.
Types of Implant Prostheses We Offer
Dr. Jamila Miller and her team have been restoring implants for years. There are several different ways they accomplish this. Here are a few.
Implant Retained Dentures as known as All-On-X
An implant retained denture is a non-removable prosthesis that is screwed into place using 4-6 implants. An implant retained denture is a full arch replacement. It is shaped like a horse shoe, eliminating the bulky acrylic that covers the roof of your mouth. It can only be removed by your dentist.
Implant Overdenture
An implant overdenture is a removable prosthesis that “snaps” into place using 2-4 implants, depending on the arch and bone quality. An overdenture is a full arch replacement. Overdentures are a great alternative to conventional dentures. They help stabilize your dentures by giving you the retention a conventional denture cannot due to the placement of implants.
Implant Partial Dentures
Implants can also be used to help stabilize partial dentures. The nice thing about using implants for partial dentures is that it eliminates that metal clasp that grips around your natural tooth. The partial denture “snaps” into the implant giving you great retention. Now you can smile without seeing metal and it is also a great way to help preserve the tooth that was being used to stabilize the partial in your mouth.
Implant Crown/Bridge
An implant crown or bridge is a great way to restore missing or broken teeth. Dr. Miller is able to replace your existing tooth by attaching it onto the dental implant using an abutment, which will restore that area back to normal function.
What are Some of the Benefits of Having Dental Implants?
Dental implants are a superior form of tooth restoration for the following reasons:
- They stabilize dentures allowing you to eat more foods and speak more clearly
- They mimic the appearance of your natural teeth
- They aid in function
- They help stimulate bone growth
- They make your smile more youthful and attractive
