Did you know that approximately one quarter of the adult population (ages 20-65) has untreated cavities? While a cavity may start small, it can grow into a painful issue that leaves you vulnerable to tooth decay. This can cause irreparable damage to the tooth, or even lead to loss of the tooth. Dr. Jamila Miller and her team can help you avoid the stress, discomfort, and cost of tooth damage or tooth loss by providing you with dental fillings and saving your teeth.
Dental fillings are a simple but highly effective solution to cavities. Call (219) 836-4214 or request an appointment online so we can help you!
What is the Purpose of Dental Fillings?
The primary purpose of dental fillings is to replace the tooth structure that was removed due to decay. Tooth decay starts with plaque and bacteria building up on the surface of your tooth, creating acid. The acid will begin to wear down the enamel of the tooth. Once the enamel has been compromised the decay will begin to spread throughout the tooth faster. This happens because the dentin, the layer of tooth structure beneath the enamel, is not nearly as strong as the enamel. If decay is not detected or addressed it can ultimately result in unpleasant, expensive consequences or even the loss of a tooth.
Once detected, Dr. Miller will remove the decayed portion of the tooth. She prepares the area to be filled with a tooth-colored composite material. This is placed where the decay was removed. Now completed, your tooth is free of decay, and is restored to its natural shape and appearance.
What Can I Expect at My Appointment for Fillings?
Dr. Miller will sit down with you to discuss your needs in detail. She will walk you through the procedure so you fully understand what to expect. She will be happy to answer all your questions and make you feel more comfortable going into your treatment.
During the procedure, we can provide you with light sedation if you prefer to make the appointment easier. Dr. Miller will do her best to remove as little of the tooth structure as possible when placing the filling, which will bond seamlessly to your tooth and blend in with your surrounding teeth.
Are Dental Fillings Painful?
Placement of dental fillings is a virtually painless procedure. Minor discomfort of the tooth following treatment may be expected 24-48 hours after your procedure, but this is only temporary. If you do still experience some discomfort after a few days, please call our office immediately at (219) 836-4214 so we can assist you!
